Our Story

Twenty years of serving individuals, families, and those who serve the Lord.

It Started with a Love for Accounting

Some people drift into accounting. I fell in love with it in high school, and I never fell out.

That love led me to the Colorado Department of Revenue, where I served for nearly ten years. I rose through the ranks faster than most and became the youngest supervisor, Tax Examiner III, in the department's history at that time. Leading a team of tax examiners meant knowing the law deeply, because every decision had to stand on it. Those years gave me something few preparers have: an inside view of how returns are examined, where they go wrong, and what it takes to get them right the first time.

A Firm for Everyone, with a Heart for Ministry

I founded A Twenty-First Century Matthew in 2007 to put that knowledge to work. From the beginning, we have prepared returns for individuals and families from all walks of life. Along the way, we developed a deep specialty in the returns that challenge most preparers: those of pastors, missionaries, full-time Christian workers, and churches.

Ministry taxes are unlike anyone else's. Housing allowances, self-employment tax on ministerial income, and church payroll rules trip up even experienced preparers. For twenty years, we have made them simple for our clients.

Today we serve clients nationwide, from families down the road to pastors in small towns and missionaries overseas.

Twenty years in, I love this work more than ever, and I know it better than ever. That is what every client receives.

Why “Matthew”?

Matthew was a tax collector sitting at the receipt of custom when the Lord Jesus called him.

“Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.” (Matthew 9:9)

We are a Christian firm, and our name is a reminder that tax work can be done to the glory of God.

“And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men.” (Colossians 3:23)

Integrity and Diligence

Two pillars have guided the firm from its founding. They shape how we prepare every return and how we treat every client.

Integrity means telling you the truth about your return, your options, and your fees, and preparing every return honestly.

Diligence means doing the careful work: every detail checked, every question answered, and every return reviewed before it's filed.

Our Team

As the firm has grown, we've added preparers who share our commitment to integrity and diligence. Every preparer is trained in ministry tax issues, and every return is reviewed before it's filed.
